Takamatsu City Museum of Art was opened in 1949 as the nation’s first regional public art museum. It boasts Japan’s leading contemporary art collection in terms of both quality and quantity. It has assembled masterpieces by Japan’s best known artists from the post-war period to the present day, from Taro Okamoto to Yoshitomo Nara. For Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture, where the arts thrive thanks to such events as the Setouchi International Art Festival, it forms a cultural platform and is a living art archive to be proud of.

In this book, we have carefully selected 109 masterpieces, critically acclaimed both at home and abroad, from the Japanese contemporary art collection. Combined with illustrations and celebrity columns, it gives an overview of the trends in Japanese contemporary art.
