🪡📕'AOYAMA Satoru: A Boy Who Sews Forever'
・
The sewing machine represents many things: the Industrial Revolution, the decline of handiwork, gender perceptions. Using this multivalent tool, Aoyama Satoru (1973–) fashions humorous and satirical works capturing the many issues and contradictions that surround us in this world. The beginnings of his oeuvre reach back to his study of textile art at Goldsmiths, University of London, where—over his time as a man in a program made up of 90 percent women students—he cultivated an awareness not only of art, but of the labor and feminist issues underlying textiles.

In today’s society, where technology grows ever dominant and AI seems poised to supplant humans, Aoyama’s world speaks to us with quiet, yet profound insight. This collection, the artist’s first, brings together a selection of roughly 150 works created over twenty years from early to most recent, enriched throughout by Aoyama’s own commentary.

Aoyama Satoru, born in 1973 in Tokyo, grew up in an art-rich environment thanks to the influence of his grandfather, a Nika Association painter. He graduated in textiles from Goldsmiths, University of London, in 1998 and earned an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2001. Using a 1940s industrial sewing machine, he produces a prolific body of artworks that probe the ever-shifting value of labor and of humanity. In recent years he has also actively branched out into other work, including holding art seminars and student workshops.

'The Original' captured the imaginations of visitors when it was held from March to June 2023 at 21_21 Design Sight in Roppongi, Tokyo. Now, the contents of that exhibition return in this book showcasing roughly 150 examples of product design from the nineteenth century to today all chosen for their pioneering originality. Commentaries shed light on the appeal of each item from modern-day perspectives, while the chronological organization of the book clearly lays out the evolution of diverse categories of products—from furniture to lighting to tableware, toys, and more—so as to offer readers a better understanding not only of the social backgrounds behind the works but of the history of product design itself.

The concluding volume to the author’s twenty-year-long series of portraits of high school students from throughout Japan.

As Ono sees it, the few years of high school offer teens a precious opportunity when teens are able to seriously brood and reflect on themselves, and in that sense their figures strike at the heart of the human condition. He began the series out of the anticipation that photographing these youths would bring him just a little closer to answering the great question of what it means to be human.
・
Ono’s hope while working on the series was that by capturing every student, each irreplaceable in their own way, in a portrait together with the surroundings in which they were grounded, he would ultimately also be able to document the changes in the very landscape of Japan itself. The accumulated results are portraits for his young subjects that also serve as portraits of the times.

Over more than seventy years since the start of her career in the 1950s, contemporary artist Mishima Kimiyo (1932–2024) has consistently astounded viewers with her many masterpieces, from ceramic “breakable printed matter” objets to works themed on empty cans and cardboard boxes or rendered out of scrap iron and other scavenged materials. Her reputation continues to grow both in Japan and around the world to this day: she has a public artwork, "Another Rebirth 2005-N," on display on the island of Naoshima, one of the sites of the Setouchi Art Triennale, and she was the only Japan-based artist to be featured in the exhibition "Another Energy: Power to Continue Challenging—16 Women Artists from around the World" held at the Mori Art Museum from April 2021 to January 2022.

This book presents a look back at Mishima’s career along with roughly ninety works. From overinformation to mass consumption and garbage, these works combine an unsparing gaze on the dark side of modern society with Mishima’s signature playfulness, and—as such—are sure to strike the hearts of readers living today in a world where these same issues are growing ever more immediate and pressing.

Since 2010, Yoshiyuki Okuyama has pursued a prolific career as a photographer and filmmaker, actively publishing and exhibiting his own works on the one hand while also creating a memorable body of projects on commission on the other. 'The Town You Live In,' featuring young actresses photographed in various locations around Tokyo, was originally serialized for three years in the magazine 'Eyescream;' issued in book form by Space Shower Networks in 2017, it attracted attention for its impressive lineup of stars as well as for Okuyama’s use of a simple Polaroid camera, among other innovative techniques, to bring out new dimensions of their appeal.

Now, that book, which has fallen out of print in the seven years since, returns in a new edition under a new publisher.

Farmer's florist Keiko Nishida was born in Osaka. In 1991 she moved to France, where she worked at a florist in Paris before settling down on a flower farm in the nearby village of La Chéraille in 2007. Today she designs wedding and other arrangements and teaches classes using flowers from the farm’s extensive grounds.
