Hot off the press—Asian picture books are all the rage! The latest Japanese and Korean picture books attracting attention overseas.

The Biennial of Illustrations Bratislava (BIB) is one of the world’s largest competitive exhibitions of picture-book illustrations, held every two years in the Slovak capital of Bratislava.

Japan has taken part ever since the competition started in 1967, with many outstanding Japanese prizewinners including Tashima Seizo, Anno Mitsumasa, Sakai Komako, Kikuchi Chiki, and mirocomachiko. This catalogue to a BIB exhibition in Japan brings together award-winning work selected for the 28th BIB in 2021, as well as original illustrations and related materials spotlighting Japan and South Korea, two centers of the vibrant picture-book scene in Asia in recent years.

Artists featured (Japan)
Shiotani Mamiko, Abe Hiroshi, Arai Maki, Arai Ryoji, Iino Kazuyoshi, Ueda Makoto, Kikuchi Chiki, Suzuki Koji, Tashima Seizo, Tajima Yukihiko, Tateno Hiroshi, Nakano Masanori, Furiya Nana, Matsumoto Taiyo, mirocomachiko
