Follow the thought processes that go into architects’ shaping of art museums.

The companion volume to an exhibition held at the Chigasaki City Museum of Art from April 2025, this book brings together photographs, archival materials, and architect interviews providing insights into the architecture of eight art museums. Featured are the Chigasaki City Museum of Art by Yamaguchi Yoichiro, who is noted for his designs rooted in the local community; the Shimane Arts Center by Naito Hiroshi, cladded entirely in local traditional Iwami tiles; Simose Museum by Ban Shigeru, which utilizes Hiroshima shipbuilding techniques; the Inujima Seirensho Art Museum by Sambuichi Hiroshi, a recycling-based complex that leverages natural energy sources; the Teshima Art Museum by Nishizawa Ryue, where art, architecture, and the surrounding environment meet; and three sites—the Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura; the National Museum of Western Art; and the Gunma Museum of Art, Tatebayashi—explored through the holdings of the National Archives of Modern Architecture. A book-within-a-book, “The Poetry of Space,” presents a “gallery” of verses composed by playwright Yamamoto Suguru expressly for the exhibition.
