Taiji Matsue was twenty-five in 1988 when he walked the arid, sun-scorched land of Andalucia in Spain, camera in hand. Coming as it did after the presentation of his debut work, Transit (1985–1987), the trip had a momentous impact on Matsue and the subsequent determination of his style as a photographer. This collection provides an important bridge between Transit and Matsue’s first major series, the 1990s gazetteer—indeed, it fills in the sole missing page in the story of his career.
Photographer Taiji Matsue was born in Tokyo in 1963 and graduated in geography from the University of Tokyo in 1987. He received the Higashikawa Awards New Photographer Award in 1996 and the Kimura Ihei Award in 2002. Major publications include Hashima (Getsuyosha, 2017), Lim (Seigensha, 2015), jp0205 (Seigensha, 2013), and cell (Akaaka, 2008).
