Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood . . . explore the evolution of fairy-tale imagery across time and place through the lens of modes and fashion.

Fairies, sorcerers, shadowy woods, magical metamorphoses: fairy tales, with their enchanting motifs, have inspired a rich profusion of imagery via interpretations in illustrations, stage art, fashion, and other forms of visual culture. Icons of beloved characters such as the hood of Little Red Riding Hood, the boots of Puss in Boots, and Cinderella’s glass slippers represent the crossing of fairy-tale imagination with fashion sensibilities.

This book examines the presence of fashion in fairy tales, tracing the evolution of associated visual imagery from the perspectives of fashion, art, and design. The focus is placed on illustrations from the “golden age” of picture books in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Europe, with attention also given to women’s wear and to ballet-related materials including from the Ballets Russes.

Includes an essay by Noriko Seki (associate professor, Kobe University; curator, Hyogo Performing Arts Center Kenji Usui Ballet Collection) and an interview with Kunio Iwaya (French-literature scholar, art critic)
