Today Saul Leiter enjoys high acclaim around the world, including in Japan. His street photography, in particular, enthralls us with its evocative juxtapositions of the Manhattan cityscape with New Yorkers in unguarded moments, captured as though Leiter had himself become one with this neighborhood where he lived until his death.
After Leiter passed away in 2013, the wife-and-husband team of Margit Erb and Michael Parillo, who had worked closely with him, established the Saul Leiter Foundation and embarked on the task of digitally archiving the mountain of more than 10,000 slides that he had left behind in his studio. This book presents the first fruits of that ongoing project in the form of seventy-six street photographs selected from those never-before-seen slides.
