The theme is “absence”: the first Japanese collection of the works of French contemporary artist Sophie Calle.

The first collection of Sophie Calle’s art to be published in Japan, this book brings together such masterful works as Grand Bouquet (2020), inspired by Odilon Redon’s mural of the same name in the collection of the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, Tokyo; Les Picasso confines (Picasso in Lockdown; 2023), which shows the works of the master packaged up—“absent”—at the Musée Picasso during Covid-19 lockdowns; Que voyez-vous? (What Do You See?; 2013), featuring photos of and comments by people contemplating the empty frames of stolen paintings; the text-and-photo series Parce que (Because; 2018); and the video installation Voir la mer (See the Sea; 2011). With Japanese translations of the original French texts—as integral to the works as the visuals—in the back pages, and a book design that appealingly evokes Calle’s worldview, the volume offers readers a deeper understanding of this world-acclaimed contemporary artist. A catalogue-cum-companion-volume to the exhibition Absences: Toulouse-Lautrec and Sophie Calle held at the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, Tokyo, from November 2024 to January 2025.

Born in France in 1953, Sophie Calle has been active since the 1980s as a conceptual artist who combines photography and text into richly narrative works based on manifestly ordinary and private experiences. Showings in Japan have included the 2013–2016 touring exhibition For the Last and First Time (Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, Nagasaki Prefectural Art Museum) and a 2019 solo exhibition at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art. Her most recent exhibition in Japan, Absences: Toulouse-Lautrec and Sophie Calle, commemorates the November 2024 reopening of the Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, Tokyo. She is the recipient of the 2024 Praemium Imperiale in painting.
