Originally published by Seigensha in 2006, A World of Eikoh Hosoe weaves anew into a single volume the best of eleven series—Man and Woman (1961), Ordeal by Roses (1963), Kamaitachi (1969), Embrace (1971), Taka-chan and I (1997), Why, Mother, Why? (2004), Tatsumi Hijikata Butoh Compendium: Scab and Caramel (1989), The Butterfly Dream (2006), Gaudi’s Universe (1984), Luna Rossa (2000), and Ukiyo-e Projections (2004). Eighteen years later, the storied collection is back in a new edition. Pages printed on no fewer than four different stocks lead readers to an invaluable reencounter with Eikoh Hosoe’s world as it was in each era.
Eikoh Hosoe (1933–2024) was born in Yamagata Prefecture and raised in Tokyo. He received the grand prize in the student division of the Fuji Photo Contest in 1951 and enrolled in the Tokyo Junior College of Photography (present-day Tokyo Polytechnic University) the following year. In 1959 he cofounded the Vivo photographers’ collective, which continued until 1961. Major publications include Man and Woman (Camera Art-sha, 1961), Ordeal by Roses (Shueisha, 1963; new edition, 1984), and Kamaitachi (Gendai Shichosha, 1970; Seigensha, 2008, 2009); major honors, the 1960 Japan Photo Critics Association Newcomer’s Award, the 1963 Japan Photo Critics Association Artist Award, and a 2010 recognition as a Person of Cultural Merit. He passed away in 2024 at the age of ninety-one.
