The vast body of photography and painting that Saul Leiter (1923–2013) produced nearly up to his death shows his extraordinary talent for bringing out the beauty of everyday scenes in New York City. While he is primarily known for the poetic street photographs he took of his East Village neighborhood—abstract, painting-like compositions marked by punches of vivid color—Leiter also created black-and-white street photography, highly intimate black-and-white portraits and nudes, and paintings rendered over his own photographed nudes; most of these works remained tucked away in his apartment throughout his lifetime, out of the public eye. At the same time, he enjoyed a prolific career from the late 1950s to 1970s as a fashion photographer for Harper’s Bazaar and other magazines.
This definitive compilation draws from the massive archives of the Saul Leiter Foundation and includes previously unreleased works, contact sheets, and an illustrated chronology of the artist’s life, offering a comprehensive picture of his diverse artistic expression and exploration.
The original edition of this book was published in the United Kingdom in 2023 by Thames & Hudson Limited.
