Screenwriter Kuniko Mukoda was a pioneer of the family drama in Japan. Premiering worldwide only on Netflix on January 9, 2025, Asura brings Like Asura (1979–1980), arguably her greatest masterpiece, back to life in the modern day through the talents of director Hirokazu Kore-eda and a stellar cast including Rie Miyazawa, Machiko Ono, Yu Aoi, and Suzu Hirose as the central four sisters.
This volume presents the stills that photographer/cinematographer Mikiya Takimoto—who previously teamed with Kore-eda on Air Doll, The Third Murder, and Our Little Sister—shot during his work on Asura. From the shifting countenances of the sisters to sets and backgrounds that draw audiences instantly back in time to 1979, the images will engross viewers regardless of their familiarity with the series. The polish and poise of the book design by Kaoru Kasai furthers the photos’ allure.
Mikiya Takimoto was born in 1974 and embarked on a career as an independent photographer in 1998 after studying under Tamotsu Fujii. He is active in many fields, including ad photography and commercials, and has published and exhibited his work extensively both in Japan and overseas. Major series include Bauhaus Dessau (2005), Sightseeing (2007), Land Space (2013), Le Corbusier (2017), Chaos (2018), and Lumière/Prière (2024).
Netflix Series “Asura”
STORY:
One winter day, the four Takezawa sisters—ikebana teacher Tsunako (Rie Miyazawa), housewife Makiko (Machiko Ono), librarian Takiko (Yu Aoi) and waitress Sakiko (Suzu Hirose)—get together for the first time in a while. Takiko suspects that their aging father, Kotaro, has a lover and child. While the other sisters find this unbelievable, they promise to keep this from their mother, Fuji. However, this commotion brings to light various conflicts and secrets that lurk in the women’s lives.
